Comprehensive Pre-Purchase Survey: Why It’s Essential Before Buying a Boat
When purchasing a used sailboat, motor yacht, catamaran, or gulet, conducting a pre-purchase survey is not just a recommendation – it is a necessity. At Esta Yachting, we offer internationally accredited comprehensive boat surveys that follow the standards of the International Institute of Marine Surveying IIMS. Our goal is to protect your investment and help you make fully informed decisions based on professional inspection reports.
What Does a Full Condition Survey Include
A full condition survey is a detailed inspection that assesses the vessel’s structural integrity, onboard systems, and general condition. Depending on the scope, it may also include a sea trial. Below are the primary components of the comprehensive survey provided by Esta Yachting
Hull
For GRP fiberglass hulls, we assess the structural condition after drying the boat on land, using moisture meters and other professional tools. For steel or metal hulls, ultrasound thickness testing is conducted.
Safety Equipment
All safety equipment onboard is checked for condition, certification, and functionality, ensuring the vessel meets international safety standards.
Steering and Propulsion System
We inspect the rudder and propeller shaft alignment, test manual rotation, and check for bearing play by turning the rudder both ways.
Deck and Superstructure
A structural inspection of deck fittings, deck-to-hull joints, hatches, windows, guardrails, and the general condition of the deck area.
Deck Gear
We assess anchor winches, cleats, winches, boarding ladders, stanchions, and all mooring equipment to ensure proper function and safety.
Rigging and Sail System for sailboats
Inspection of mast, boom, rigging connections, standing and running rigging, and deck-level fittings. Mast top inspections are conducted if weather permits and the boat is afloat.
Interior Structures
We open floor hatches to check the bilge, internal bulkheads, stringers, frames, and the general structural health of the interior. We also inspect pumps, keel bolts, and fastenings.
Engine and Fuel System
We examine the engine room, fire suppression systems, insulation, engine mounts, general condition of the engine, fuel lines, anti-siphon systems, and cooling systems. Sea trials can also be conducted on request.
Electrical Systems
A complete inspection of the vessel’s electrical installation, batteries, connections, and shore power systems.
Navigation Electronics
Inspection and functional testing of GPS, autopilot, chart plotters, radar, VHF, and other navigation aids.
Domestic Systems
Freshwater systems, grey black water systems, refrigeration units, air conditioning, and other onboard comforts are inspected for performance.
